Genevieve Leavold
Somerset, United Kingdom
Genevieve Leavold is a British abstract painter, predominantly known for her freeform, organic paintings. Her reverence for spontaneous gesture draws from Zen, Buddhism, and other philosophies that embrace the concept of universal consciousness.
She developed an early fascination with Eastern Philosophy from her Serbian mother, a Religion and Philosophy teacher. Having grown up as one of 8 children, art acted as an escape for her. Originally trained in scenic painting and theatre design, she translates forms from nature into vibrant abstract paintings, bringing the viewer into a place which exists in the fringes of the visible landscape.
Her whole approach is immediacy; working wet colour into wet and layering glazes gives her work its recognisable softness and movement. Characterised by sweeping forms emerging from a dark background, her paintings developed from observations of nature in man-made environments.
Genevieve’s signature painting style developed when she moved to Belgrade Serbia in 2014, relocating to a new country where she knew very little of the language gave her the space and fresh perspective to dig into the themes and forms which are expressed in her paintings. She returned to the UK in 2022 and is now based at the prestigious Silk Mill Studios in Somerset.
